Marvel's New Warriors Comedy, With Squirrel Girl, Lands at Freeform
Squirrel Girl is officially coming to a television near you.
Freeform has given a 10-episode, straight-to-series order to Marvel’s New Warriors, the first half-hour comedy from Marvel Studios, which will put the spotlight on the aforementioned comic-book heroine, THR.com reports. Cougar Town co-creator Kevin Biegel is in talks to serve as showrunner on the comedy, which is expected to premiere in 2018.

TVLine first reported back in August that Marvel and ABC Studios were shopping around a New Warriors series. The show is said to revolve around six teenagers “with powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers” who “want to make a difference in the world… even if the world isn’t ready.” The series will follow their “journey into adulthood, except in this world, they’re not quite super and not yet heroes and the guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.”
The character of Doreen Green aka Squirrel Girl is described as a natural leader who possesses the powers of a squirrel. Not only is she acrobatic, but has the ability to talk to squirrels. She also has immense faith in people, which allows her to teach others how to better believe in themselves.
New Warriors is the second Marvel series ordered at Freeform, joining the hour-long drama Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, which is also expected to debut next year.

“Marvel’s New Warriors have always been fan favorites and now particularly with the addition of Squirrel Girl, they are Marvel Television favorites as well,”Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb said in a statement. “After the amazing experience we’ve had with Freeform on Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, we can’t think of a better place for our young heroes.”
