Marvel's Runaways Snags Official Series Order at Hulu

Hulu is officially entering the crowded comic-book arena, handing a formal series order to Marvel’s Runaways, from executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (The O.C.).

Based on the comics by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, the live-action Runways tells the coming-of-age story of a disparate group of teenagers who, per the streaming service, “must unite against a common foe — their parents.” For those unfamiliar with the source material, the ‘rents are revealed to be part of a crime organization known as “The Pride,” which hosts an annual “charity” gathering that serves as a meeting place for nefarious time-travelers, wizards, mad scientists, aliens and mutants. It is slated to premiere in late 2017/early 2018.

In addition, Hulu has also announced a straight-to-series order for The First (working title), a co-production with the UK’s Channel 4, from executive producer Beau Willimon (House of Cards). The futuristic drama chronicles the first human mission to Mars and the “challenges of taking the first steps toward interplanetary colonization.” Production is scheduled to begin later this year, with an eye on a 2018 debut.
