Marty Krofft, Creator of H.R. Pufnstuf and Land of the Lost, Dead at 86

Marty Krofft, who with his brother Sid Krofft created a vast world of children’s television programming, died on Saturday of kidney failure. He was 86.

Often referred to as “The King of Saturday Mornings,” Krofft died in Los Angeles surrounded by family and friends, his publicist reports.

Marty and his brother Sid, through their Sid & Marty Pictures shingle, produced family entertainment for more than 50 years, after becomin a household name in the 1970s with the likes of H.R. Pufnstuf, The Bugaloos, Lidsville, Land of the Lost, Sigmund & the Sea Monsters (“You better run, you better hide…”), Pryor’s Place (starring Richard Pryor), Far Out Space Nuts, Lost Saucer, The Krofft Supershow, Wonderbug and Bigfoot, Electra Woman & Dyna Girl, Dr. Shrinker and (whew!) Bigfoot & Wildboy.

Marty Krofft also created primetime programs that included the satirical D.C. Follies series, The Donny & Marie Show, The Brady Bunch Hour and Barbara Mandrell & the Mandrell Sisters.

Man, just reading those lists of shows above, it really hits you, doesn’t it my fellow Gen Xers?

In 2018, Marty and Sid received the Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, and in 2020, they both received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Marty is survived by his brothers, Harry and Sid; daughters Deanna Krofft-Pope. Kristina Krofft and Kendra Krofft; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
