Rumors of a romance between Meryl Streep and Martin Short have been greatly exaggerated.

Following Sunday’s Golden Globes, fans began speculating about the seeming closeness between the Only Murders in the Building costars.

On Tuesday, a rep for Short confirmed to PEOPLE that the pair "are just very good friends, nothing more."

In October, PEOPLE confirmed that the Mamma Mia! star, 74, is separated from husband of 45 years Don Gummer.

While the news broke just recently, the pair had actually quietly ended their romantic relationship six years ago.

Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,” a rep for Streep told PEOPLE in a statement.

The estranged spouses had not been seen publicly together since the 2018 Oscars, but the three-time Oscar winner had been wearing her wedding band just days before the split was confirmed.

She and Gummer, 77 — who wed in 1978 after just six months together — had celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in September. They share four children together: son Henry and daughters Mamie, Grace, and Louisa.

Short, 73, lost his wife, actress Nancy Dolman, to ovarian cancer in 2010. The pair had been married for 30 years, and he called the relationship a “triumph” in a revealing interview with AARP The Magazine in 2019.

"So it's tough. She died in 2010, but I still communicate with her all the time. It's 'Hey Nan,' you know?" he shared. "How would she react to this decision or that, especially regarding our three kids."

Short and Dolman share daughter Katherine, 40, and sons Oliver, 37, and Henry, 34.

At Sunday's Golden Globes, Streep and Short were seated with fellow OMITB star Selena Gomez. All three actors were nominated for their respective roles in the hit series, which Streep joined last year.  Though Streep didn't take home a trophy this year, she did break her own previous record for the most-nominated actor in Golden Globes history with this, her 33rd nod. She’s also the actor with the most all-time wins at the Globes, having won nine total.
