When affluent socialite Eleanor Strubing accuses Black chauffeur Joseph Spell of sexual assault and attempted murder, Marshall leaves for conservative Connecticut. Sam Friedman, a Jewish attorney in the area who has never taken on a criminal case, soon becomes his partner. In conjunction, the two men fortify their position against the racist and anti-Semitic opinions of those who believe Spell is guilty.
