Marseille Web Fest Promotes Online Entertainment

The Marseille Web Fest, launched in 2011, is Europe’s oldest and largest web fest, and the second-oldest in the world, after the LA Webfest.

Fest director and founder Jean-Michel Albert has established partnerships with other web fests, and events such as Drew Baldwin’s Streamy awards competition, and maintains regular contact with digital departments of studios such as Fox Digital, Sony, and Fullscreen.

The 2016 edition includes a competitive section with 25 web series. Among participants: sci-fi series “Anamnesis” and “Simulated Dead People,” complemented by a tribute to South Korea, workshops, talks, writing residencies, and a market.

This year’s eight-person jury is topped by Gilles Galud, CEO of Vivendi’s digital production structure, Studio+, and includes “Marseille”-scribe Dan Franck.

Two local web series will screen at the fest — an episode from long-running sketch-show “Speed Rating,” and a sneak preview of “Hyperconnexion,” directed by Lasko CQ.

Lasko attended Marseille Webfest in 2015, when he worked on “Hyperconnexion” with Anne Santa Maria, producer of sci-fi web series “Osmosis.”

Working on a tight budget, he secured local sponsorships and assembled a 100-person crew.

“Marseille is buzzing with creators that understand new digital platforms,” says Albert. “The Marseille Web Fest helps stimulate local production by showcasing the latest trends.”

The sixth edition of the Marseille Web Fest runs Oct. 21-22.
