On September 9, 2021, Marlo Hampton posted a video on YouTube capturing moments from her hair transplant surgery. "Today is a big day here in Chicago," she began. "I'm gonna go and get a hair transplant today. I'm super nervous." Marlo went on to explain that "being an African American woman, we always have retention on our edges from braids and pulling ponytails, and at 45 [years old], it has just bothered me, so I decided today was the day."

During the May 1 episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Marlo shared before-and-after photos of her transplant, showing the final results from the procedure. (She also noted she went to the same doctor, Dr. Vladimir Panine, that castmate Drew Sidora had seen previously.)

"It's no joke," Marlo said. "They come bringing out the damn shavers, and they [are] takin' all those hair follicles out, but now… my edges laid."

Marlo revealed in a September 10 Essence story why she wanted to document her hair journey. "It was Sunday and I was lying in bed. I was feeling a little down and I thought to myself, people always see me as glamorous and fabulous, I want people to see the real deal," she told the publication. "Social media shows so much glamorous stuff, and it's not fab all the time."

"There are a lot of women that have experienced this, but we don't share in it," she added. "We try to cover it up. I wanted my Hamptons [fans] to know that there are solutions."

Marlo even documented on Instagram Live the "bad" side effects immediately following the procedure. "All the fluid and everything from my head just went to my face. In a couple of days, it should be going down," she explained at the time. Although Marlo had two black eyes and her face was swollen, she declared the procedure "was so worth it."
