Mark Wahlberg takes his family on an action-packed vacation in his next movie.

PEOPLE has the exclusive first look at The Family Plan starring Wahlberg, 52, as a suburban dad and car salesman named Dan Morgan — whose secret past as an elite government assassin comes back to haunt him.

"When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old baby into their minivan and takes off on an impromptu cross-country road trip to Las Vegas," per a synopsis.

"Determined to protect his family — while treating them to the vacation of a lifetime — Dan must put his long-dormant skills into action, without revealing his true identity."

Director Simon Cellan Jones tells PEOPLE, "I know he’s a huge movie star and all, but Mark is amazingly easy to work with. He’s got that secret sauce, obviously, he’s natural and instinctive, super professional and really well prepared."

Jones says Wahlberg, a two-time Oscar nominee, "comes to work with strong and clear ideas about his character and the movie as a whole, but he’s also super collaborative."

"And, as you know, he’s just got funny bones," Jones adds. "Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan are in top form as well — the two of them have incredible on-screen chemistry and you really buy into them as a married couple."

He adds that their child costars "are all-in as well and deliver great performances," joking, "I promise you’ve never seen a baby do stunts like this before."

Aside from Wahlberg and Monaghan, the movie also stars Zoe Colletti, Van Crosby, Saïd Taghmaoui, Maggie Q and Ciarán Hinds.

Jones says his experience as a father of four "really grabbed me" and inspired him to want to make this "story of a real, dysfunctional and slightly-stuck-in-a-rut family growing whole again. Super funny and relatable in the same package."

The Family Plan was written by David Coggeshall, who is known for his work on the television series Watch Over Me, Scream: The TV Series and Orphan: First Kill.

"The film comes packed with nail-biting and explosive action, great jokes all the way through, and some amazing music choices (two words: Vanilla Ice)," Jones teases. "But most of all, it’s just fun, full stop."

The Family Plan is streaming on Apple TV+ Dec. 15.
