The lights go down, and the orchestra starts playing a familiar tune.

Then the piano kicks in, leading to a smooth and charismatic voice.

Is it Ol' Blue Eyes? In a sense.

The man in the tailored suit with microphone in hand is Mark Tremonti. The Grammy Award winner comes to the Basie at 8 p.m. Saturday, singing the songs of Frank Sinatra.

'I, Tonya' showing in Asbury Park

Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding in a scene from "I, Tonya."
Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding in a scene from "I, Tonya."

Before there was chaos at the Capitol, Jan. 6 captivated the country as the day figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was knee-capped at the Cobo Arena in Detroit in 1994. To commemorate that infamous scandal, ShowRoom Cinema in Asbury Park screens the 2017 film "I, Tonya" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

In 1991, figure skater Tonya Harding (played in the film by Margot Robbie) was at the top of her game. In 1994, her world came crashing down when her ex-husband conspired to injure Nancy Kerrigan (Caitlin Carver), a fellow Olympic hopeful, in a poorly conceived attack that turned Harding’s world upside down.

From her humble upbringings, to becoming the first American to successfully land a triple axel in competition, to transformation into tabloid fodder, "I, Tonya" chronicles Harding’s journey. Part biographical sports mockumentary, part American tragedy,

The film also stars Sebastian Stan and Allison Janey, who won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for playing Harding's abusive mother.

The ShowRoom will be offering a free small popcorn to anyone attending with a bandaged knee.

Go: 'I, Tonya," 7:30 p.m. Saturday, ShowRoom Cinema, 707 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park, $15; hello@showroomcinemas.com, https://showroomcinemas.com/movies/i-tonya.

A shared love of art in Stafford Township

An exhibit featuring a couple with different approaches to art is on exhibit January and February at Pine Shores Art Association’s gallery in Stafford Township.

Paul Daukas and Lois Mullen, two longtime LBI residents, described themselves this way in a news release:

"He grew up in the city of Philadelphia; she grew up on a farm in Macungie (Lehigh County, Pennsylvania). He became a Marine at 18; she became a fair queen at 17. He was a graphic designer and started his own advertising company; she became an attorney, criminal prosecutor and real estate broker. He paints with brilliant moving color. She paints and creates with wrack-line treasures found on the beach.

A reception for "Paul Daukas/Lois Mullen" takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Pine Shores art Association, 94 Stafford Ave., Manahawkin section of Stafford Township.

"Although we have different backgrounds (and opinions), we have a shared love of art," Mullen said in a recent email. "Paul has completely swung my view of abstract and contemporary art. He is also a fan of Picasso, and my 3 Fab Fakes in the show would never have been created if it wasn't for his influence."

While the building is open every day for classes, the best time to see the exhibit is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays. The exhibit also can be seen from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays when there open sessions. We are told the exhibit‘s artwork will be available to view starting early next week at pineshoresartassociation.org (under Special Events/Exhibits).
