Within the last decade, Mark Ruffalo has collected many film and TV acting trophies – including an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and three SAG Awards – but has yet to win the favor of the Critics Choice Association despite receiving numerous nominations from them across multiple categories. Although he has had the least luck in their Best Supporting Actor contests, his inclusion in 2024’s could finally lead to a positive outcome. Either way, the “Poor Things” cast member will at least finish this awards season having made history as the first man to ever compete for this featured performance prize four times.

On his previous three Best Supporting Actor bids for “The Kids Are All Right” (2011), “Foxcatcher” (2015), and “Spotlight” (2016), Ruffalo was respectively bested by Christian Bale (“The Fighter”), J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”), and Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”). The eight-year gap between his two most recent notices is one of the largest in this category’s history, alongside that of Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club,” 2014; “House of Gucci,” 2022) and behind those of Anthony Hopkins (22 years – “Amistad,” 1998; “The Two Popes,” 2020) and two of his current competitors: Robert Downey Jr. (15 years – “Tropic Thunder,” 2009; “Oppenheimer”) and Robert De Niro (11 years – “Silver Linings Playbook,” 2013; “Killers of the Flower Moon”).

Having just broken his long-standing tie with Philip Seymour Hoffman (“Charlie Wilson’s War,” 2008; “Doubt,” 2009; “The Master,” 2013) as the most-nominated performer in this category, Ruffalo could now become the first person to initially win any CCA movie acting award on his fourth try. The overall record for most same-category losses before a victory would still belong to Leonardo DiCaprio, whose current seventh Best Actor bid for “Killers of the Flower Moon” follows his successful fifth one for “The Revenant” (2016). Among all supporting winners, Hoffman experienced the most failures (two) before triumphing (for “The Master”).

Ruffalo happens to be one of two performers with four supporting CCA nominations, with the sole female example being Amy Adams, who was lauded for “Junebug” in 2006 and then earned mentions for “The Fighter,” “The Master,” and “Vice.” He is also one of a handful of repeat Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor contenders, having earned recognition for the HBO productions “The Normal Heart” (2014) and “I Know This Much Is True” (2021). In those respective cases, he came up short against Billy Bob Thornton (“Fargo”) and John Boyega (“Small Axe”).

Ruffalo’s new supporting nomination is one of a lucky 13 that was bestowed upon “Poor Things,” some others of which include Best Picture, Best Actress (Emma Stone), and Best Director (Yorgos Lanthimos). While it’s true that he isn’t the clear frontrunner in his race, that’s really only because there isn’t one at this point. Rather, based on the way this season has gone so far, he and most of his competitors seem to be on relatively equal footing, and he still maintains a great chance of pulling ahead in the end.
