Mark Ruffalo Nets His Fourth Best Supporting Actor Oscar Nomination for “Poor Things”

The list of stars with a whopping four Best Supporting Actor Academy Award nominations just grew thanks to ‘Poor Things’

Mark Ruffalo just claimed his fourth Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination.

Thanks for his performance in Poor Things, Ruffalo, 56, joins an esteemed list of actors with a whopping four nods in that category.

The BAFTA Award-nominated Poor Things, also starring Emma Stone, is in the running at the 96th Academy Awards with 11 nominations.

That includes Stone for leading actress, Yorgos Lanthimos for directing and Tony McNamara for adapting Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel of the same name for the screen.

The film costars Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Christopher Abbott and SAG nominee Willem Dafoe, who was recently honored by the Hollywood Walk of Fame with a star on Los Angeles' Hollywood Boulevard.

Ruffalo had previously received three Best Supporting Actor nominations for The Kids Are All Right in 2011, Foxcatcher in 2015, and Spotlight in 2016. Audiences and critics alike raved at his hilarious Poor Things performance as foppish lawyer Duncan Wedderburn, who steals Bella away for an international adventure.

At the New York City premiere in December, the Golden Globe-nominated Ruffalo told PEOPLE that Poor Things “started with about three weeks of rehearsals, which was just playing theater games, really, and goofing off and cutting up” which “gave us the feeling of safety with each other and a feeling of fun.”

He also praised Stone, calling his Oscar-winning costar a “once-in-a-generation talent.”

Ruffalo has joined an exclusive group of industry legends collectively holding the record for the most Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations. The stars who have also notched four in that category are Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, Walter Brennan, Jeff Bridges, Robert Duvall, Arthur Kennedy and Claude Rains.

Also faring well among the nominations Tuesday morning were Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, with a leading 13, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon with 10 and Greta Gerwig's Barbie with eight.

The 96th Academy Awards will be held March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. Jimmy Kimmel is returning as the annual ceremony’s host.
