Mark Ruffalo Learns Brie Larson Was in '13 Going on 30', Promptly Loses Mind

This week marks the 15th anniversary of the release of the teen girl body-swapping comedy, 13 Going On 30, and it was a subject that wasn’t far from the minds of two of the stars of Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame. The film, which stars Jennifer Garner as a 13-year-old girl who wakes up in the future body of her 30-year-old self, at the time starred not one, but two future superheroes. And if you ask the Hulk himself, Mark Ruffalo, he didn’t know in 2004 that he was in a movie starring a future colleague.

While on the red carpet for the Avengers premiere Ruffalo was shown a photo of the group of mean girls in the movie, called the “Six Chicks,” one of whom is played a 15-year-old Brie Larson. It’s a fact that’s been well known to most people on social media, but when Ruffalo was shown the photo he had to crack up. “She was a mean girl! I didn’t know that!” The two performers never shared any scenes together because Ruffalo played the adult version of Garner’s love interest, but his reaction remains priceless nonetheless. If anything the response from his wife, Sunrise, is even better; “it looks like her a little bit.” Ruffalo responds, “It looks like her a lot. It’s her!”

Larson herself was asked about her brief, silent, role in the feature as well. As she says, it was the first time she felt she truly wanted to direct. Watching the excitement around her inspired her to take the reins and, eventually, direct her own film, Unicorn Store.

It’s always amazing to revisit old classics and discover people you didn’t know. Social media always lights up whenever talk of 13 Going on 30 happens, discovering that Larson is just standing there as one of the nameless mean girls. If anything this should inspire everyone to go revisit the movie on its 15th anniversary. It remains one of the best body-swapping movies aimed at young women! And then afterwards go see Captain Marvel and say you knew Brie Larson before she was famous.

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters this Friday.
