Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk definitely won’t be in “Captain America 4”, for sure

Hulk won’t be smashing alongside Anthony Mackie’s Captain America anytime soon.

After Mark Ruffalo seemed to confirm Bruce Banner’s appearance in the forthcoming Captain America: Brave New World, a source confirmed to EW that the actor misunderstood the question and Ruffalo/Banner/Hulk won’t be in the movie after all.

During a Santa Barbara International Film Festival event honoring the Poor Things actor on Sunday, moderator Anne Thompson asked “You have Captain America: Brave New World next, right?” Ruffalo responded, “Yeah,” adding that “It’s gonna be great!” He implied that he couldn’t discuss the project any further because “they [Marvel] literally have a drone that follows me around,” joking about the studio’s notorious secrecy surrounding upcoming projects.

However, a source clarified to EW that Ruffalo was confirming that Brave New World would be Marvel Studios’ next project, rather than his own next movie.

EW has reached out to reps for Marvel and Ruffalo.

Fans have speculated about the star's potential involvement in Brave New World because multiple Hulk-related characters have been confirmed to appear, including Bruce Banner’s old flame Betty Ross (Liv Tyler), the villain Samuel Sterns/Leader (Tim Blake Nelson), and Hulk’s nemesis Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, all of whom appeared in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. Thunderbolt Ross was played by William Hurt in that film and several subsequent appearances, but will be played by Harrison Ford due to Hurt’s death.

Ruffalo also confirmed that there won’t be a standalone Hulk movie from Marvel Studios anytime soon. The actor said that studio head Kevin Feige told him “We’ll never give you a standalone Hulk,” and added, “I don’t mean to burst anyone’s bubble, but that’s not happening.”

Ruffalo first appeared as Bruce Banner in 2012’s The Avengers (taking over the role from Edward Norton), followed by supporting performances in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. He also made brief cameo appearances in the post-credits scenes of Iron Man 3, Captain Marvel, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Ruffalo’s Hulk most recently appeared in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, in which the character revealed he has a long-lost son, Skaar.

Captain America: Brave New World, which does not star Mark Ruffalo, releases Feb. 14, 2025.
