Mark Ruffalo filmed two versions of 'Infinity War' ending, didn't know Hulk survived until he saw movie

This past weekend Marvel hosted the press junket for Avengers: Endgame and, to preserve the intense secrecy surrounding the film, only invited the survivors of the Snapture. (Not like we expected any less. After all, if any of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “fallen” had shown up, their comments would have been short — just ask Chadwick Boseman.)

In fact, the spoiler-weary Marvel didn’t even screen the movie, opting to show us only about six minutes of footage before we interviewed the cast, who also haven’t seen the finished film.

So with a dearth of talking points, we turned towards the shocking climax of Avengers: Infinity War, in which half of our favorite MCU heroes were dusted before our eyes. We asked those “still with us” if they were relieved their characters did not fall victim to Thanos’s lethal snap, and thus had to watch themselves disintegrate onscreen.

“I have survivor’s guilt, mostly,” said Chris Hemsworth (Thor).

“It’s hard being the ones left behind,” agreed Don Cheadle (War Machine).

“I think like every actor you’re just like, ‘Great, I get more screen time,’” admitted Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow).

Then came a big revelation from our friend Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk): “I didn’t know until I saw the movie,” he said. “For one take, I did disappear, and then the other one I didn’t.” That would mean that during filming even certain actors weren’t aware of their fates.

We’re almost positive Ruffalo is being sincere. And considering his track record for spoilers, where he ranks alongside Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie (both dusted in Infinity War, by the way) as the most loose-lipped on MCU’s roster, it’s not surprising. Besides, Marvel admittedly resorts to re-editing scenes for the trailers to misdirect the audience, like when Ruffalo’s Hulk appeared in the Wakanda battle scene in the Infinity War previews but not in the actual film.

“I was pretty sure it was gonna be me,” Ruffalo admitted. “It’s like Survivor. It’s like, who’s gonna get kicked off the island? And I probably should’ve. … It’s like Project Runway for leakers.”

If you’re looking for intel on why certain supers died and while others survived in Infinity War — all of the original Avengers survived whereas many of the newer MCU’ers (Boseman’s Black Panther, Holland’s Spider-Man, the majority of the Guardians of the Galaxy) — co-directors Anthony and Joe Russo ain’t saying much. But they will leave you with a tease.

“The only thing we’ll say in that regard,” said Joe, “is that there’s a reason that the original six Avengers survived.”
