Mark Consuelos jokes about his kids taking care of him and Kelly Ripa one day: 'We've taken them on so many nice vacations'

Kelly Ripa might joke about her children refusing to leave her and husband Mark Consuelos’s home, despite their efforts to help them transition into adulthood. However, Consuelos says that he’s embracing the time that they spend together as a family, and hoping that it’ll pay off for him and Ripa in the long run.

The Riverdale actor spoke with Yahoo Entertainment about the holiday season and the traditions that his family partakes in this time of year. He even mentioned how special it is to spend time at home in New York because soon enough, his kids won’t all be living there.

“It’s actually more special now, the kids are getting older. We have two in college, and I know it’s fleeting,” the 48-year-old shares. “It’s a matter of time before they’re off doing their own thing with their own families.”

But once it’s time for Michael, 22, Lola, 18, and Joaquin, 16, to start their own holiday traditions, Consuelos hopes that he and Ripa are invited.

“I mean, you can only hope,” he jokes. “We’ve taken them on so many nice vacations that I think we’ll at least have one. We’re banking on one of the kids to take care of us.”

The conversation comes a few months after Ripa joked about her son experiencing “extreme poverty” after officially moving out and living on his own in Brooklyn.

“I think he loves the freedom. He hates paying his own rent and he is chronically poor,” Ripa said during an Oct. appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “He’s experiencing being an adult.”

In the meantime, the children are still participating in the family’s annual holiday card, which Ripa recently posted to her Instagram.

“The holiday card is always something that my wife [does], she’s so in charge of that and she does such a good job and we have so much fun with that,” Consuelos explains of the tradition. “This year, we’re actually able to take it from a People shoot we did. So we instantly had the perfect holiday card.”

The family of five was featured in the publication’s Most Beautiful issue back in April, and pictures from the photo shoot were used for this year’s card. Despite the accolade, the parents have kept their children grounded by spending time together and giving back during the holiday season. This year, they teamed up with Amazon, picking up supplies from Amazon and Whole Foods to bring to Women in Need Shelter (WIN) in New York and encouraging others to give back with AmazonSmile Charity Lists.

“It’s a cause close to our heart,” Consuelos says. “We’re really grateful for things that we have during these days and to be reminded that it’s also a time that people don’t always have the same things. Just as far as shelter, a place to call home. It’s a good reminder for everyone to give back and think of those that need our help.”
