Marisa Tomei, Alfred Molina to Spend Summer at Williamstown Theater Festival
The Williamstown Theater Festival, the Massachusetts summer theater festival that regularly attracts stars and yields New York transfers, has tapped actors including Marisa Tomei, Alfred Molina, Jane Kaczmarek and Michael Stuhlbarg to star in a 2016 season that includes four world premieres and a new production of Tennessee Williams’ “The Rose Tattoo.”
Located in Williamstown, Mass., WTF is close enough to New York City to bring in talent that more often works in New York or L.A., and has a habit of sending its shows on to Broadway. Recent seasons have seen “Fool for Love” with Sam Rockwell, “The Visit” with Chita Rivera and “The Elephant Man” with Bradley Cooper all get their start at Williamstown before heading for Broadway (and, in the case of “Elephant Man,” on to London).
Tomei will star as the widow Serafina in director Trip Cullman’s staging of “Rose Tattoo,” while Molina and Kaczmarek will topline the American bow of Tom Holloway’s “And No More Shall We Part,” about a woman and her husband grappling with a diagnosis of terminal illness. Anne Kauffman directs.
Stuhlbarg (“Jobs,” “Trumbo”) stars in the world premiere of sci-fi comedy thriller “The Chinese Room,” written by Michael West and directed by James McDonald (“Cloud Nine”). Three more world premieres also made the WTF slate, including Martyna Majok’s “Cost of Living,” directed by Jo Bonney; “Poster Boy,” a new musical by Craig Carnelia and Joe Tracz and helmed by Stafford Arima (“Allegiance”); and “Romance Novels for Dummies,” Boo Killebrew’s comedy directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel (“Hand to God”).
A revival of Wendy Wasserstein’s “An American Daughter,” helmed by Evan Cabnet, rounds out the full roster of WTF, now under the leadership of artistic director (and Manhattan Theater Club alum) Mandy Greenfield. The 2016 season runs June 28-Aug. 21.
