Marimba artist to perform for 'Concert in the Galleries' series at North Dakota Museum of Art

Apr. 13—GRAND FORKS — The first solo percussionist to receive the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Award will be the featured musician at the "Concerts in the Galleries" series performance set for 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14, at the North Dakota Museum of Art on the UND camps.

Marimba artist Ji Su Jung will perform a program that includes music by "phenomenal women composers, both well-known and little-known, who have written some astonishing music," said Jennifer Tarlin, chamber music coordinator at the museum.

The music will range from works by an early 17th Century lutenist and composer to pieces by contemporary composers, Tarlin said.

Born in South Korea, Jung began studying marimba at age 3, a rarity among percussionists, according to the museum's event announcement.

Since launching her career as a soloist, she has performed concertos with leading orchestras including the Houston Symphony, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Grand Rapids Symphony and Boise Philharmonic.

The marimba artist has received numerous awards and competition prizes, including First Prize and the Audience Choice Award at the 2018 Ima Hogg Competition of the Houston Symphony and the top prize at the 2015 International Marimba Competition in Austria.

This artist "has a distinctive musical voice that is instantly recognizable for its depth and lyricism," according to the museum's announcement.

Jung serves on the faculties of the Curtis Institute of Music and the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. She has taught master classes at New York University's Steinhardt School, the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Michigan State University and Beijing Central Conservatory in China, among other schools.

During her visit to Grand Forks, Jung will also conduct a master class for UND percussionists and perform in a Young Audience Concert at Valley Middle School on Monday, April 15. The latter event is part of the museum's "Monday Music in the Schools" program. Local arts funding has made it possible for teachers and students who participate in this program to attend the concert series performances free, while the ticket supply lasts, Tarlin said.
