Marilyn Manson will expand his acting resume with new role, joining the cast of American Gods for the forthcoming third season of the Starz series. Appropriately, the veteran rocker will portray the frontman of a fictional metal band.

The sci-fi television series is based on a novel by Neil Gaiman, of whom Manson is a fan. The singer plays Johan Wengren, frontman of a “Viking death metal band” called Blood Death.

Both Manson’s character and the band Blood Death are described as “a source of power for the Ian McShane-portrayed Mr. Wednesday in his war with the New Gods,” according to Deadline.

In a statement, show runner Chic Eglee said, “As a longtime admirer of his estimable talent as an author, artist, musician, and actor, it is dope indeed to be working with Mr. Manson.”

Eglee added, “Bringing his specific energy, wit, and boundless enthusiasm for all-things-Neil-Gaiman to the role of Johan, a Norse ‘berserker’ in service to Odin, his performance promises to be disturbing, original, and uniquely entertaining.”

Manson was also recently cast in an upcoming television adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Stand, which will air on CBS All Access.

On the music side, Manson has been working on a new album with producer Shooter Jennings. The shock rocker recently said the LP will “definitely” be out in 2019, although no details have been unveiled yet.
