After Margot Robbie’s $1.4 billion year for Barbie, Hollywood has been eager to learn what project she would tackle next. The 33-year-old actress and her LuckyChap production company are headed in a similar direction, but it’s not a Barbie sequel.

In an unexpected move, Robbie is taking on a live-action film of the classic board game, Monopoly. The toy is a staple in American households and is considered “the world’s most popular board game brand, with 99% global awareness,” according to Hasbro Entertainment. That means the film should appeal to a worldwide audience, and if anyone knows how to tell a story about a board game, it’s Robbie.

Casting has not been announced yet, but Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson told the audience at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday that Robbie and her team have “a clear point of view” for making the Monopoly movie an absolute delight for moviegoers, per Variety. The outlet also reported that the breaking news was met with applause and cheers because Barbie made a lot of money for theater owners in 2023.

“I could not imagine a better production team for this beloved and iconic brand than LuckyChap,” Fogelson told the CinemaCon guests. “They are exceptional producers who choose their projects with great thought and care and join Monopoly with a clear point of view. We are tremendously excited to be working with the entire LuckyChap team on what we all believe can be their next blockbuster.”

LuckyChap gave a cute hint at what movie lovers can expect once the movie is produced — it will likely be funny. “Monopoly is a top property — pun fully intended,” said LuckyChap. “Like all of the best IP, this game has resonated worldwide for generations, and we are so excited to bring this game to life alongside the wonderful teams involved at Lionsgate and Hasbro.”

There are also plenty of opportunities for A-list actors to star in the film and we are going to bet that some celebrities are already calling their agents to get a meeting with Robbie. Someone has to play the thimble! The project will likely be filled with fun cameos, like John Cena’s mermaid moment in Barbie, so we can’t wait to see who’s on the casting roster!
