Margot Robbie worked hard to get Cathy Yan as director for Birds of Prey, which marked the first time a non-white, female filmmaker had been hired to direct a DC movie.
Now the Harley Quinn actress has confirmed to Yahoo Movies, during an interview about her new movie Terminal, that she will be putting just as much effort into ensuring her co-leads are just as diverse.
“Yep, yes exactly, real life isn’t so one specific image,” Robbie said. “We’ve got to reflect that onscreen.”
Birds of Prey is a DC Comics series that is centred around an everchanging line-up of female heroes, villains, and antiheroes.
It’s unclear exactly which ones will appear in the live-action film but it’s likely Batgirl/Barbara Gordon will as she is getting her own solo movie. There’s potential for Suicide Squad’s Katana (Karen Fukuhara) as she has also appeared in the line-up of this comic book series.
Black Canary, Huntress, Catwoman, Hawkgirl, Power Girl, Poison Ivy, and Vixen are also options for the film, which Robbie describes as an “R-rated girl gang film”.
“I was like, ‘Harley needs friends.’ Harley loves interacting with people, so don’t ever make her do a standalone film,” the actress told Collider when describing her pitch.
“She’s got to be with other people, it should be a girl gang. I wasn’t seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space. So that was always a big part of it.”
Robbie also confirmed to Yahoo Movies that Harley Quinn will have a completely new look, but couldn’t reveal any details about the new costume.
“No, honestly [it’s] because the costumes haven’t been designed yet but yes she’ll have new looks,” the actress confirmed. “There will be new Halloween costumes out there, one day.”
Terminal is in UK cinemas now and will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and, Digital from August 6
