  • It's not uncommon for actors to do little things on the set of a film to help each other "get into character."

  • On the set of the new Barbie movie, Margot Robbie reportedly gave co-star Ryan Gosling little gifts to help him feel more akin to the character of Ken.

  • The gifts were all beach-related, as Gosling's character's job is reportedly just "beach."

"How did you get into character?" is probably one of the most exhausting questions asked of actors on any press junket. Nine times out of 10, you're either going to get a canned, generic answer about "digging deep." And that 10th time? That's when an actor will want to show off how "method" they are, typically with an on-set anecdote about in-character behavior that in reality just sounds exhausting, or even abusive.

With "method acting" so often used as an excuse for bad behavior, it's refreshing when you hear a story about someone going an extra mile for a role in a way that's kind to their co-stars.

Maybe it's because Margot Robbie was reportedly on the receiving end of some uncomfortable on-set gifts from an actor "in character" while filming the infamous Suicide Squad, but apparently when she traded Harley Quinn's baseball bat for Barbie's high heels, she decided to gift her co-star some things that are a little more fun, positive, and pink!

Vogue recently got the scoop on the hotly anticipated movie Barbie, from Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig. Gerwig's previous two films, Lady Bird and Little Women, both earned Best Picture nominations, and were celebrated for the stories of on-set camaraderie between the cast members.

While it's still too soon to tell whether Barbie will repeat Gerwig's previous films' Oscar feats, at least in terms of a positive on-set experience, it's clear the director has done it again.

Speaking with Vogue's Abby Aguire, Ryan Gosling, who is playing Ken in Barbie, used a question about how he "found his character" to talk about costar Margot Robbie's habit of giving daily gifts to help put Ryan in the proper Ken mindset:

"She left a pink present with a pink bow, from Barbie to Ken, every day while we were filming. They were all beach-related. Like puka shells, or a sign that says ‘Pray for surf.’ Because Ken’s job is just beach. I’ve never quite figured out what that means. But I felt like she was trying to help Ken understand, through these gifts that she was giving."

Did the gift-giving pay off? Will the twice-nominated Gosling (Best Actor for Half Nelson and La La Land) pick up a third for his portrayal of Ken? We'll know more once Barbie hits the big screen on July 21.
