Margaret Qualley to Play Amanda Knox in Hulu Drama

Hulu has greenlit a limited series about Amanda Knox, with Margaret Qualley set to play the lead role.

The currently untitled series, from 20th Television and The Littlefield Company (Fargo, The Handmaid’s Tale), has been on a fast development track at the Disney-owned streamer. K.J. Steinberg (This Is Us, Gossip Girl) created the series and will serve as showrunner; Knox and Monica Lewinsky are also among the executive producers.

Hulu describes the eight-episode series as “based on the true story of how Knox was wrongfully convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free.”

Knox’s case became the subject of intense media scrutiny for years: She and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were arrested after Kercher, Knox’s roommate when both were studying in Italy, was found murdered in their apartment. Knox and Sollecito were convicted of killing Kercher in 2009, had their convictions overturned in 2011 and were found guilty again in a retrial before finally being exonerated in 2015 by Italy’s Supreme Court of Cassation, the highest court in the country.

Knox’s life and the murder case have previously been the subject of or inspiration for a (factually challenged) 2011 Lifetime movie, a 2014 English film titled The Face of an Angel and a 2016 feature documentary. Knox also accused Matt Damon and writer-director Tom McCarthy of “ripping off” her story in the 2021 movie Stillwater.

Qualley currently stars in Drive-Away Dolls and is a two-time Emmy nominee for Maid and Fosse/Verdon. Her credits also include Poor Things, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and HBO’s The Leftovers. She’s repped by CAA, Sloane Offer and Relevant.

Steinberg will executive produce the Hulu series with Qualley; Warren Littlefield, Lisa Harrison, Ann Johnson and Graham Littlefield of The Littlefield Company; Lewinsky; and Knox and Chris Robinson via their Knox Robinson Productions.
