Morris filed for divorce on Oct. 2 after five years of marriage to Hurd, with whom she shares son Hayes Andrew

Maren Morris has spoken about her single status for the first time since news broke that she was filing for divorce from husband Ryan Hurd.

In a new interview on SiriusXM's The Howard Stern Show, the 33-year-old "My Church" singer-songwriter revealed she's not currently dating and is instead spending her time working on new music.

"I think this year has — for a lot of people, not just me — a lot of people that are close to me have gone through it. I've known so many people that have gone through breakups or divorces," said Morris.

Stern, 69, asked to clarify the timeline of Morris and Hurd's divorce, to which she responded: "It's ongoing."

The radio show host then questioned whether or not the Grammy winner is currently dating. "No, I would like this to sort of wrap up," she said, referencing the divorce.

"I don’t have the headspace for that, but I am writing so much right now," explained Morris. "That’s kind of been my way of dating, is just through song."

Weeks after news of the divorce broke in October, Morris posted an Instagram photo of herself and Hurd taking Hayes trick-or-treating for Halloween.

In the black-and-white photo, Morris smiled widely as she held on to her son’s hand and what appeared to be a bag of candy in another.

The little boy’s face was blocked out with a heart, but he could be seen wearing adorable pants that transformed into a dinosaur body and head at his waist.

While Hayes appeared to be decked out for trick-or treating, Morris and Hurd kept their looks more on the casual side. The “Pass It On” singer also held his son's other hand in his and smiled brightly as he bent down for the snap.

Morris had previously shared an inspirational quote on her Instagram Stories that seemingly alluded to the acceptance of an uncertain future.

The quote featured the partially crossed-out text "It will be fine," before the words "it will just be, and when it is, you will face what's necessary."

On Oct. 2, Morris filed for divorce from Hurd, 36, after five years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.

The docs said the couple — who share 3½-year-old son Hayes Andrew — have been separated since the date of filing.

On July 25, a parenting seminar was ordered by a judge— a requirement for all Davidson County divorce cases involving children — and indicated that Morris and Hurd would have 60 days from the date of filing their complaint to complete the seminar. Documents indicate that Morris successfully completed a four-hour parenting skills seminar on Oct. 14.

Morris and Hurd initially met in 2013 during a songwriting session (the result was Tim McGraw’s “Last Turn Home”), and married in March 2018 after nearly three years of dating.

“We had been friends for only a couple of years, but there was always this writing chemistry in the room, and eventually, the timing of it was undeniable. We had such a foundation built off writing so many songs over the years that we were like, ‘Why are we avoiding this?'” Morris told PEOPLE in 2017.

The pair continued to collaborate throughout the years, and in 2021, released their first-ever duet “Chasing After You,” which became a country hit and was nominated for best country duo or group performance at the Grammys.

Just weeks before news of the split broke, Morris announced that she was leaving aspects of country music behind after feeling “very, very distanced” from the industry and its politics, prompting a supportive Instagram post from Hurd.

"She deserves to be celebrated, not just tolerated," Hurd wrote at the time. "I’m so sick of watching my wife get the s--- kicked out of her by the internet. I’m sick of every talking head having some kind of stupid opinion about what she says. It’s the same every time, why are you surprised when she calls out something racist or homophobic, I’m sick of people getting rewarded for it."

"She deserves a little sunshine for the burden she has carried for every artist and fan that feels the same way. I can’t wait for that first tour and to see all of the smiling and beautiful people who needed these songs and and also need HER. I can’t wait to make music that follows the same path, whatever that is," he continued. "Love you, MM. Keep on keepin’ on."

In April, the "Circles Around This Town" musician celebrated her 33rd birthday with a sweet tribute from Hurd.

"This picture is from the weekend we got engaged," he captioned two photos on his Instagram Story, including one where he was kissing Morris onstage in 2017. "We don't take as many photos together these days but that's OK. Spent the day in NYC with my powerhouse celebrating her birthday. Love you, MM. Happy birthday 🎂"

In a second post, he shared Morris' photo of her lounging in bed. "Things got crazy. We ate a cake. I like getting older with you," he wrote.
