Marco Rubio: Anti-Trump Republicans Would Rather Side With POTUS Than ‘Media That Never Cuts Him a Break’

Sen. Marco Rubio offered a candid assessment of the relationship between Republicans and the media, tweeting out on Wednesday that many Republicans won’t attack President Trump even when they know he is wrong in order to avoid the appearance of siding with the media.

“Many Republicans won’t criticize Trump even when they don’t agree with him b/c it means siding with a media that nevers (sic) cuts him a break, turns even little things he does into an act of evil, are also unfair to them & in the end will still attack you anyway,” said Rubio in a tweet.

The senator also included a link to an Axios report by Sara Fischer which revealed that most Republican voters did not believe what the national media said about Trump and thought it intentionally reported fake news.

In additional tweets, Rubio expanded on the position Trump supporters often found themselves in.

“GOP voters defend Trump when attacked by media, OFTEN DESPITE NOT LIKING WHAT HE DID OR SAID, because they view media as unfair & biased,” he said.

“It’s not good that people increasingly get news & information only from sources that confirm what they want to hear,” Rubio added. “It’s terrible that their is increasingly no space for nuance or 3rd way on any issue. If media doesn’t think they have contributed to this they are very mistaken.”

The Axios report suggests that President Trump’s repeated and longstanding attacks on the media have taken a toll on its credibility.

The findings fulfill a longstanding goal of Trump’s, according to “60 Minutes” reporter Lesley Stahl, who said the president told her that his true purpose in attacking the media was to blunt the impact of damaging stories.

“He said, ‘You know why I do it? I do it to discredit you all and demean you all, so when you write negative stories about me no one will believe you,'” she said last month.
