Warner Bros has unveiled a first look at Michael Gandolfini as a young Tony Soprano – the character portrayed by his father James Gandolfini for eight years on The Sopranos.

A brief clip of the younger Gandolfini as Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark – a prequel to the series – is included in a trailer released on Wednesday. The video teases Warner Bros and HBO Max’s same-day premieres deal.

Both companies announced last month that in 2021, all the films released by Warner Bros will be available to stream on HBO Max from the day of their premieres.

The landmark deal has proven controversial and has been met with criticism from industry figures such as Judd Apatow and Christopher Nolan.

In Wednesday’s trailer, the young Tony Soprano is seen getting into a fistfight on the street. He gets called by his full name, Antonio Soprano, rather than his usual nickname, Tony.

The trailer also includes glimpses from other upcoming releases, such as Dune, In the Heights, and The Suicide Squad.

The Many Saints of Newark, like many other films, has been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

It’s now scheduled for release in September 2021 in the US and October 2021 in the UK.
