Mandy Moore knows there's no place like home for the holidays.

The Dr. Death star, 39, recently shared her Christmas plans include plenty of downtime with her sons — August "Gus" Harrison, 2, and Oscar "Ozzie" Bennett, 13 months — and husband, Taylor Goldsmith.

"I'm excited for these next couple of weeks just to be home and cozy and enjoy this time of year," Moore tells PEOPLE at the Dr. Death season 2 premiere in West Hollywood earlier in December.

This marks the first year that Moore and Goldsmith's oldest son, Gus, is really beginning to understand the festive season. As a result, the mom of two is seeing Christmas through her little one's eyes.

"He's loving being a big brother and he is loving the holidays," Moore says. "Now, he's aware of it in a way that he wasn't until this year, like last year, he was just sort of starting to grasp Christmas trees, but now he understands the concept of Santa and all of that is it's so much more exciting."

As her boys get older, the This Is Us actress is excited about establishing traditions as a family of four — something she hopes will begin this year. "We're going to, this year, I feel like, is when we're finally going to just start to put down some roots in terms of what we want the holidays to be," she adds.

One tradition Moore and Goldsmith have already established is filling the house full of music, both during Christmas and throughout the year. In October she exclusively told PEOPLE that "music is a big through line in our house, and playing music and singing holiday songs."

Given that both she and Goldsmith are musicians, it only makes sense that singing holiday songs is one of the family's favorite ways to celebrate the season.

Moore and Goldsmith welcomed Gus in February 2021. Their second son, Ozzie, arrived a little over a year later in October 2022. This February, the actress opened up to PEOPLE about how being a mom to two little boys has changed her life for the better.

"You wake up with endless gratitude every day, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it is hard work," she said. "And the lack of sleep is something that is a constant and makes everything feel all the more challenging. But, I think, it's just having grace for ourselves as parents and as humans and recognizing that each day is going to present its own challenges, but its own immense joy as well."
