Mandy Moore opens up about her new album and ex Ryan Adams: 'He’s taken so much for so long from so many people'
Mandy Moore is reflecting on a decade of growth. In a new interview in the New York Times, the This Is Us star shared news of Silver Landings — her first album in 10 years, which is dropping March 6 — and opened up about her former marriage to musician Ryan Adams. The stars were married in 2009 and had their divorce finalized in 2016.
Throughout her relationship with Adams — who is also a producer — Moore’s music career stagnated. She shares that while Adams did not want her to work with anyone else musically, he was also not working with her to put her new work out there. The result was a crisis of self-worth. Moore says she began asking herself questions like, “‘Am I good enough? What do I bring to the table?’ Because if my creative partner and romantic partner can’t even make time or doesn’t want to work with me, where does that leave me?”
“Music was a point of control for him,” she told the New York Times in a separate 2019 piece which featured various women coming forward about “manipulative behavior in which Adams dangled career opportunities while simultaneously pursuing female artists for sex.”
In this more recent Times interview, Moore, who married musician Taylor Goldsmith in 2018, reflects on that article and its aftermath. “I was blown out of the water by the information, some of which was in the article and some of which after the fact I found out wasn’t a part of it,” she says, adding “Women were, are, so hungry to have this conversation, I think, when it involves emotional and psychological abuse.”

The year Moore and Adams divorced was also the year that This Is Us kicked off, though Moore wants to be sure that Adams does not have a central narrative in her career. “I just don’t want this thing to be about him,” she says of the Times interview about her new album. “He’s taken so much for so long from so many people. I can promise you he gets satisfaction being talked about in any capacity. I just know that about him. I haven’t spoken to him in, I don’t know, two years or something, but just knowing him as well as I know him, he really gets off on being talked about.”
Moore, of course, has her own thriving career to discuss. In addition to working on her forthcoming album and her hit TV show, the star has also been hitting the campaign trail for her chosen presidential candidate, Pete Buttigieg. “I think he’s the most qualified, and he’s the most electable,” she says, adding that she’ll ultimately vote for whoever is the Democratic nominee.
As Moore gets ready for her first album in a decade to be released, she seems to be taking stock of the decade between her last album and now. “I’m a firm believer in things happening for a reason, and it took the last 10 years of my life to get to this point.” she told the New York Times. “I really feel like it was worth it.”
