ABC just placed an order for a TV pilot, and the details are music to our ears — Mandy Moore is producing a new show titled ’90s Popstar about, aptly, her rise to fame as a pop diva belting out hits like the 1999 bubblegum ballad, “Candy.” The news comes mere weeks after Moore released her first original song in a decade and the first released track from a forthcoming “California-sounding” new album.

Per Variety, Moore will act as co-executive producer for the series alongside writer and executive producer Amanda Lasher, most recently showrunner of The Bold Type. Also co-executive producing will be This Is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, as well as Adam Londy, Regina Lee and Marc Webb. Multiple reports peg the series as centered on a small-town Florida family who must adapt to their new reality when their teenage daughter goes from aspiring singer to pop superstar practically overnight. Sounds familiar, right?

Moore celebrated the news via Instagram on Friday, sharing an article by Deadline about the pilot order. “Big news! I’m so thrilled and grateful for the chance to tell a version of my own story with an incredible team (including our TIU showrunners/writers @iaptaker and @bergernight),” she wrote. “It’s my first project as a producer and I can not wait to watch it come to fruition.”

The series obviously has the potential for longevity, given how Moore segued her start with the ’90s debut album So Real into six studio albums total — the last of which was 2009’s Amanda Leigh. The series could also mine material from Moore’s crossover into TV and film, which includes early ’00s cult classics like The Princess Diaries, A Walk to Remember, Chasing Liberty and Saved.

It’s too soon at this point to know whether or not Moore will also star in the series in some capacity. Her role as Rebecca Pearson on NBC’s flagship drama This Is Us undoubtedly keeps her pretty busy, not to mention the time commitment that comes with her renewed musical career.

Still, she seems like a shoo-in to fill the fictional role inspired by her real-life mother, right? Here’s hoping.
