Mandy Moore is ready to "really lean into enjoying the holiday season."

This year, the This Is Us star, 39, says she is feeling settled into her home and is eager to start new traditions with her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, and their two children: Augustus "Gus" Harrison, 2, and Oscar "Ozzie" Bennett, 14 months.

"We're putting down roots and figuring out what new traditions are going to come around for the holidays. That's an exciting prospect. What are we going to do now every year that's going to feel special?" Moore tells PEOPLE.

Regardless of what traditions the Tangled actress and her family choose, their cats will be part of the celebrations.

"I don't think I've ever had any part of my life where I haven't had cats in it," says Moore, who currently has three cats: Fig, Olivia, and Peanut.

Moore plans to give the three cats their own stockings packed with holiday presents.

"Everybody gets their own stocking, so everyone feels included, but they love nothing more than some crinkled up wrapping paper and boxes," the singer-songwriter says of the holiday traditions she has in place for her pets. "Everyone's going to be happy on Christmas morning, that's for sure."

The trio of cats also helps Moore and Goldsmith keep order in the house once the holiday decorations go up by not destroying the family's Christmas tree.

"I just have kids that want to go and take ornaments off, but the cats are somehow leaving the tree alone," Moore says.

But even if the cats did dabble in Christmas tree destruction, Moore would love them all the same because she says, "Cats changed my life."

"Cats were my first pet, my first foray into any sort of understanding of responsibility," she adds.

To celebrate the fantastic impact cats can have on anyone's life, Moore has partnered with Purina Cat Chow to celebrate the brand's 60th anniversary. To mark the milestone, Purina Cat Chow created 60 Years, 60 Stories: Celebrating the Extraordinary Impact of Cats, a book filled with touching real-world stories about felines submitted by cat owners.

"The best thing about the book is that all proceeds from the sale of the book go to Pet Partners, which is a nonprofit that helps recognize and train animal therapy teams, cat owners, and their kitties to go around and help people that need an extra snuggle," Moore says.

Purina Cat Chow will donate all proceeds from the book's sale to Pet Partners through Dec. 31 and an additional $60,000 to the organization.

"It was a real no-brainer to want to be a part of this," Moore, who wrote the foreword to the book, adds. "It was a really fun, seamless partnership in that sense."
