Mandy Moore and Alexander Skarsgård act out the story of the American Red Cross on ‘Drunk History’

On the Season 5 premiere of Drunk History, with the help of narrator Amber Ruffin, Mandy Moore and Alexander Skarsgård told the tale of how Clara Barton became the founder of the American Red Cross.

On Sept. 17, 1862, during the Battle of Antietam (the bloodiest single day in American military history), Dr. James Dunn was running low on supplies. That’s when Barton showed up with supplies she’d gotten from the Ladies’ Aid Society. On the show, Barton sang her way into the Union camp using language very unlike the words she actually used. It was a common theme throughout the segment.

Barton didn’t just bring supplies, she also brought lanterns so doctors could perform surgeries well into the night. She also helped wounded soldiers on the battlefield. Soon after, President Abraham Lincoln made Barton the head of the Office of Missing Soldiers, where she saved thousands of lives.

Then, years later, Barton went on to found the American Red Cross.

Ending the segment, and in the words of Ruffin, Barton said, “I am the founder of the American Red Cross. Plus, I’m the angel of the battlefield. I [expletive] changed America itself. I win.”
