‘Mandalorian': Giancarlo Esposito Would Rather We Not Make Any Assumptions About Moff Gideon

As “The Mandalorian” prepares to hit the hyper-drive towards the end of its first season, one very important character will finally make his debut on this week’s episode.

That would be Giancarlo Esposito, whom most TV fans as drug kingpin Gus Fring from “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.” He is playing the mysterious Moff Gideon on the “Star Wars” Disney+ show. While the “Moff” in the name would suggest he’s a bad guy (after all, he is a former general in the now-fallen Empire), Esposito says the truth about this guy is more complicated.

We’ll let him explain:

“This guy is a fierce guy. You have a great amount of expectations surrounding his appearance because we don’t know whether he’s good or bad,” Esposito tells TheWrap. “The universe has fallen. Someone is trying to put it back together. Is it an organization? Is it a government? What is it? Is it a militia? Who is this person, who seems to know everything about everyone? We have a bit of a mysterious character, but once you see him and you get to know him, you’ll be intrigued by how he wields his power.”

Esposito’s debut episode is dropping Wednesday instead of the show’s customary Friday so it doesn’t overlap with “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which hits theaters this weekend.

The first six episodes of “The Mandalorian” are available on Disney+, with the seventh dropping on Wednesday.
