WARWICK — A 29-year-old man was shot late Friday afternoon in the lobby of the police station after attacking officers with a knife, Police Chief Col. Brad Connor said.

Connor said the man was in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital on Friday night.

The shooting took place at about 4:20 p.m. Connor said the man confronted a group of officers who were entering the lobby after a briefing in the community room. He said the man stabbed one officer in the torso, but the officer's bulletproof vest prevented injury.

Connor said four officers, including the officer who was stabbed, then fired at the suspect. He said they then provided medical aid on scene before the man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

Under state protocol, the Rhode Island State Police and the attorney general's office are investigating the shooting, Connor said.

Police said the lobby of the police station would remain closed until further notice. Anyone wishing to speak to police or file a report should call (401) 468-4200, he said.

The front walk leading into the lobby of the building was cordoned off Friday evening.

A state police mobile crime-lab was on the scene. An investigator took photographs within the off-limits outdoor area near the lobby and flagpole.
