Man Whose 3 Friends Froze to Death in His Backyard After Chiefs Game Had Nothing to Do with Deaths: Attorney

Ricky Johnson, David Harrington and Clayton McGeeney were found dead outside their friend's house in Kansas City, Missouri

Days after watching a Kansas City Chiefs game, three men were found dead in their friend's backyard. Now, the attorney for the Missouri man who rents the property maintains that his client had nothing to do with the tragedy.

John Picerno, who is representing Jordan Willis, tells PEOPLE in a statement that his client “is unaware of how his friends died,” and is “anxiously awaiting the results of the autopsy and toxicology report.”

According to Inside Edition, the three friends came over to Willis' home on Jan. 7 after the Chiefs game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Picerno claims that the last time his client saw the men "was when they left his house, and he went to bed." Willis, the attorney adds, was unaware that friends and family were trying to locate them "prior to being contacted by the police."

Two days later, a woman went searching for her fiancé and found a body on Willis’ porch, Fox affiliate WDAF-TV reported.

The Kansas City Police Department tells PEOPLE that after responding to her call, they found a dead body. "Upon further investigation, officers located two other dead bodies in the backyard," a spokesperson for the KCPD adds.

“There were no obvious signs of foul play observed at or near the crime scene," the spokesperson says, adding that "it is still the case that no foul play was observed or suspected."

Additionally, the KCPD confirms that "the cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner [and that an] investigation by them is underway."

Picerno, meanwhile, tells PEOPLE that Willis “does not know the timing or manner of their deaths, nor does he know how or when they exited his house. He had no knowledge that they remained in his backyard.”

Upon arriving at his rental property, police spoke to Willis and he “allowed them into the house, told them all he knew, and voluntarily consented to a search of his home,” his attorney says.

Two of the victims’ cars were parked on his street, which had been one of the things that tipped off McGeeney’s fiancée, who found the first body, per WDAF-TV. 

However, Picerno says it wasn’t “unusual” for Willis’ friends “to have left their cars there overnight.”

Willis is not facing charges in the case, which police are calling a "death investigation." The KCPD adds that "there have not been any arrests [or] charges, and no one is in custody."

According to Picerno, all Willis wants is “answers.” The attorney told NewsNation,“He’s known them for over 20 years. They’re his friends. He’s deeply hurt by their passing.”
