A Man Was Stabbed to Death While Fighting Over a Popeyes Chicken Sandwich

One man paid the ultimate price for a Popeyes chicken sandwich after a fight escalated to the point of a stabbing that left a customer dead.

According to officials in Oxon Hill, Maryland, a fight broke out at a Popeyes restaurant Monday night after one man accused another of cutting in front of him while waiting for a chicken sandwich.

The fight carried on outside where one of the men stabbed the other. The 28-year-old victim was transported to the hospital and died an hour later. The suspect took off from the scene, and police are asking for information surrounding the altercation.

Prince George’s County Police Department spokesperson Jennifer Donelan explained the situation during a press conference.

"This individual was in line, a line specifically for the sale of the sandwich, when another customer and he got into an altercation. That ended with the victim being stabbed outside of the business."

She also spoke to the senselessness of the crime.

"Somebody cut in front of the other. For you to get that angry over anything, for that type of anger to develop into this type of violence, again, is a very sad and tragic day."

Fights Have Been Breaking Out

People have been so crazy about the return of the Popeyes chicken sandwich that fights have been breaking out at locations across the country. Between the time when the sandwich was removed in August, to bringing it back on Sunday, November 3, the pent-up frustration from customers has exploded to all-out brawls between customers and employees while people wait hours in line for a sandwich.

One viral video from Sunday night shows the employees at Popeyes engaged in a brawl behind the counter after apparently breaking under the intense demand for more sammiches.

Lines On Lines

Since Sunday, people have been heading to Popeyes and waiting hours in line for a chance to score a sandwich.

They've also been airing out their frustrations on social media about the wait time.

"App didn’t work so I had to actually go to the store! Drive thru line is wrapped around the store and into the street."

Another witnessed a truly hilarious situation. "There was people in line moving money over from their savings accounts, church folks were using today’s tides to get their sandwiches. I heard someone say they gotta go take out a loan after they leave buying $40 of sandwiches."

No Word from Popeyes

Popeyes built up their promotion around their sandwich, ever since it exploded on the market, but now that it's back and causing some very serious problems, they have been quiet.

The last tweets from Popeyes, on Sunday, were praising the news of the sandwiches return, but they have not yet responded to the many complaints from customers about the quality of service and wait times in the wake of the blowup.

"Been waiting since 10 am cst for my sandwich! And the line keeps getting longer. The employees look exasperated already. And it hasn’t even been 30 minutes since you’ve opened," one customer wrote on their Twitter feed.

Another griped, "Visited the Flatbush Brooklyn store yesterday to purchase a sandwich & was immensely disappointed. Sandwich was "pre-made" and kept in a hotbox. When I separated the bun from the chicken breast, the center of the breast was soggy. Should definitely work on quality control."
