A man has been rescued two days after accidentally driving his car off a cliffside in California.

On Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol Coastal Division confirmed they'd sent a team to search the coastline from Post Ranch in Big Sur to Monastery Beach in Carmel on Tuesday morning at approximately 8:30 a.m. local time after a man left work on Sunday at around 11:30 p.m. and failed to make it home.

The rescued male and his vehicle were located approximately 400 feet down a cliff before the Big Sur Fire Chief "roped down to the victim and began to assess his injuries," the CHP Coastal Division Air Operations confirmed in a Facebook post alongside a video of the rescue.

It added that he was "franticly waving a makeshift flag."

The rescued man told authorities he "swerved to miss some deer" in the road while driving home from Post Ranch in Big Sur on Sunday, which resulted in him veering "off the roadway" and rolling "several hundred feet down the cliff edge." He added that he'd been ejected through his sunroof as the car rolled down the cliff.

"The Coastal Division Air Operations Unit received a call from Pacific Grove Police Dispatch, requesting H-70 fly the coastline from Post Ranch in Big Sur to Monastery Beach in Carmel to search for a possible vehicle over the side," the statement read.

"The CHP Airplane (A-71) was already in Monterey County for a separate call and responded to the area to search the cliffs below Hwy 1. A-71 arrived approximately 20 minutes after the request and located a vehicle approximately 400 feet over the side near the beach below," it continued.

The post added, "H-70 responded from Paso Robles and arrived overhead approximately 40 minutes later," confirming there was "no beach access or trails at the collision site, nor was the vehicle visible from the roadway."

The CHP aircraft "hoisted the victim and the Big Sur Fire Chief from the crash site" before flying the driver to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas for further treatment and care.

"A-71 was instrumental in finding the crash site and reporting the location to H-70 for rescue. Even though the victim had been over the side for two days, he appeared to be stable and suffered moderate injuries," the statement said of the man's condition.

The California Highway Patrol did not immediately reply to PEOPLE's request for further information.
