Friends are remembering a man who went missing last week following an apparent shark attack near Point Reyes National Seashore in California.

Kite surfer and tech CEO Felix Louis N’jai, 52, is being honored as someone who "brought pure joy, love, and light everywhere he went," loved ones told local Fox affiliate KTVU.

N’jai, who has not been publicly identified by police as the missing swimmer, was in the water at Wildcat Beach last week while celebrating a wedding, according to his friends.

Jim Keenan told NBC Bay Area that a shark "supposedly" grabbed N’jai by the neck and took him down, as his friends — including the groom — "rushed out of the water."

N’jai is the CEO of tech incubator Eniac Labs, according to his LinkedIn.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that he came to the U.S. to study computer engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, and would kite surf in both San Fransisco and Oregon every summer. He was even training to compete for Gambia in the Paris 2024 Olympics, friends told the outlets.

Although a search for the missing swimmer is still ongoing, the National Park Service scaled back search efforts as of Thursday, per KTVU.

NPS did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Friday.

NPRS, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Marin County Sheriff's Office, and Marin County Fire Department began a search and rescue mission for the missing man over the weekend, per The Mercury News.

When first responders arrived at the scene, the two swimmers who were with the man said they were about 25 to 50 yards from the shore when he went under, according to CBS affiliate KPIX-TV. They also reported seeing a large pool of blood in the water, according to CBS affiliate KPIX-TV.

Swimming is generally discouraged in the rough waters off the coast of Marin County, although shark attacks in the area are rare, authorities said.

A longtime friend told KTVU that “Felix was everything to every one of his friends.”

“We’re all trying to emulate a little more Felix into our life — be a little bit more compassionate and loving toward people,” friend Steve Bodner added while speaking with the Chronicle. "Oftentimes, I wanted to give up and I saw Felix and continued to do it and he was a real mentor."
