Man slain in shooting during argument in east Fort Worth, authorities say

A man was shot to death during an argument on Monday morning in east Fort Worth, police said.

The victim was shot in the upper body about 9:45 a.m. in the 4800 block of Richardson Street in a largely residential neighborhood.

During the argument, the suspect pulled a handgun and shot the victim, Fort Worth police said. Homicide detectives are investigating and are speaking with a cooperative witness who was also at the scene during the killing.

The victim’s mother identified him to Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV as 54-year-old Mika Washington. Washington, known to his family and friends as “Cole,” always had a positive outlook despite health challenges including illnesses impacting his kidneys and heart, his mother told WFAA. She said her son was found dead in the garage of his home.

Police did not announce an arrest.

“This is where Cole grew up,” Barbara Washington told WFAA. “We never thought anything like this would happen to Cole, especially right here in his home.”

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, said a spokesperson for MedStar, the city’s emergency medical service authority. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has not publicly released his name.

Washington’s death was the 36th homicide this year in Fort Worth. In 2022, there were 43 homicides in the city between Jan. 1 and June 5.
