Twin brother of NFL player found dead at power substation, Wake County deputies say

Tyrell Antar Cohen, the brother of Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen, has been found dead in Wake County, according to the Wake sheriff’s office.

Cohen apparently died by electrocution while trying to climb power equipment at an electrical substation, sheriff’s office spokesperson Eric Curry said. On Sunday evening, Raleigh police sent a news release saying they had confirmed the man who died was Cohen, 25, who had been reported missing.

Tarik Cohen grew up in Bunn, a town in Franklin County, and graduated from North Carolina A&T State University.

He asked the public to help find his brother on Twitter Saturday, according to Larry Brown Sports, a sports media site. The tweet has since been deleted.

The Bears released a statement Sunday night saying: “We are heartbroken to learn of the death of Tarik Cohen’s twin brother, Tyrell. Our immediate thoughts and prayers go out to Tarik, his mother, Tilwanda, and the rest of their family and loved ones. On behalf of the entire Bears family, we extend our most heartfelt sympathies to all who mourn his loss.”

Curry previously described the following sequence of events:

Around 2 a.m. Saturday, Tyrell Cohen fled the scene of a car accident near Interstate 540 and Six Forks Road, Curry said. Raleigh Police Department officers tried to locate him but could not find him, so they called off the search.

Later, on Saturday night, Cohen’s family filed a missing-person report with Raleigh police, Curry said. Police officers resumed their search for him Sunday morning after the report was filed, Curry said.

Shortly after 9 a.m., Curry said the sheriff’s office responded to a call from a Duke Energy substation near Lead Mine and Six Forks roads, where an employee discovered Cohen’s body. The substation is within the sheriff’s office’s jurisdiction.

“He entered the substation, which may have been resulting from the accident,” Curry said.

Authorities do not suspect foul play, Raleigh police and Wake deputies’ news releases say.
