Man Fatally Stabs Wife and 3 Children Aged 10, 12 and 17 in Hawaii Apartment in Suspected Murder-Suicide

The incident is the second deadliest mass murder in modern Hawaiian history, police say

Police are investigating the death of five people in Honolulu, Hawaii — including three children ages 10, 12 and 17 — as an apparent murder-suicide.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning local time, per the AP.

Police discovered the bodies of the three unidentified children, a wife and a husband inside the home just after 9:00 a.m. All five family members were pronounced dead at the scene, according to reports by AP and NBC News.

Honolulu Police Department said that the office received an anonymous call around 8:30 a.m. and an officer responded to the scene.

Per NBC News, Honolulu Police Department Lt. Deena Thoemme said in a press conference on Sunday that the first responding officer "didn't have enough information to make entry into the dwelling” on the first visit to the scene.

Officers entered the home after receiving a second call about an alleged domestic dispute.

"Based on the evidence found at the scene and the investigation thus far, it appears that the adult male killed the female and the juveniles with a knife that was recovered from the scene. The motive is still under investigation," Thoemmes said.

"These don't appear to be random acts," she added, noting that police are conducting interviews and reviewing security camera footage as the investigation continues and that they did not have a clear motive yet.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi also issued a statement about the case, telling local station Hawaii News Now that he was "heartbroken by the tragic incident that occurred early this morning in the peaceful Manoa neighborhood claiming the lives of an entire family, including three precious children."

"This inexplicable tragedy has deeply shaken our community," he added.

According to police, this is the deadliest mass murder in Honolulu since seven people were shot dead in the Xerox murders of Nov. 2, 1999 — the worst mass shooting to take place in the state to date.

Although police have yet to name the victims or husband, some neighbors have spoken out, telling KITV that they believe one of the children attended a nearby elementary school and that the father was a local chiropractor.

Police now say that they are waiting for report from the medical examiner's office before releasing the family's names, per NBC News.
