Man Buys Wife Flowers After Winning $5M Lottery Jackpot: 'I Was Very Pleasantly Surprised,' She Says

"He doesn't normally buy me flowers," wife Bonnie Tasch said

A Colorado woman received two, albeit slightly different, surprises last week. Not only did her husband buy her flowers, she also found out he won a massive lottery prize!

Waldemar "Bud" Tasch, 77, was on a backpacking trip in the Holy Cross Wilderness when his winning numbers were chosen for the Sept. 6 drawing for $5,067,041, the Colorado Lottery announced in a press release.

When the "avid outdoorsman" got home from his trip, he checked his ticket on the website, and when he saw the numbers matched, he thought, "It must be a mistake!" per lottery officials.

After realizing he had the winning ticket at Hangin Tree Travel Plaza in Montrose, he chose the cash option of $2,533,520, according to their statement. He then purchased a watermelon for himself and flowers for his wife.

"I was very pleasantly surprised," his wife, Bonnie Tasch, told CBS affiliate KCNC-TV. "He doesn't normally buy me flowers so that was very sweet."

The couple live a simple life and spend six months of the year in Arizona, according to the release and KCNC-TV. He told the station that he plays the lottery every month in Colorado and always uses the same lucky numbers.

Other than flowers and fruit, "Bud" plans to use the earnings to help Bonnie with upcoming surgeries and expand his classic car collection. In addition, he plans to invest the money and hire a "banker and financial planner."

According to the release, the man also plans to give back.

"I'm going to give to some charities and really think about what it is I was meant to do with this," he told lottery officials.
