Two men in their 70s may have been testing out new equipment when they were involved in a deadly diving accident off the coast of Massachusetts.

Authorities responded to Front Beach in Rockport just after 11 a.m. on Wednesday after receiving a report about a diver “in medical distress,” according to a press release from the Rockport Police Department.

The man, identified as 75-year-old Alan De Oliveira Leao, of Pepperell, received emergency aid from bystanders and first responders before he was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

During their investigation, authorities determined that a second diver was missing. Police said the second diver, identified as 78-year-old Richard Brady, of Hampton, N.H., was later found dead in the ocean off Front Beach.

It is unclear why or how the two divers died.

Mary-Alice Miller, Brady’s daughter, said the pair were testing out the equipment ahead of a trip to Venezuela, according to ABC affiliate WCVB-TV. She said they're always careful about testing their equipment and described their deaths as “shocking.”

“My dad died doing something that he absolutely loved with his brother-in-law that he absolutely loved,” said Miller.

Alan Leao Jr. said his father, who was a Brazilian immigrant, and uncle traveled all over the world to do dives. “These two were a pretty awesome duo,” he remarked, according to WHDH.

“They were doing things that their bodies probably wouldn’t want them to do,” he said. “But they did them because they were determined and they were competitive and they wanted to be out.”
