A man who attacked comedian Dave Chappelle onstage in May is learning that physical assault is no laughing matter.

Isaiah Lee, who stormed the stage during Chappelle’s performance at the Netflix Is a Joke festival in Los Angeles on May 3 and tackled the comic to the ground, has pleaded no contest to battery and entering a restricted area during a live event, Ian Thompson, chief of communications and strategic outreach for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office, told USA TODAY in an email Thursday.

Lee was sentenced to 270 days in county jail, Thompson added.

Security personnel at the Hollywood Bowl, where the festival took place, detained Lee following the attack and police then arrested him, officer Rosario Cervantes of the Los Angeles Police Department told USA TODAY at the time. Lee also pointed a replica handgun, which contained a knife blade, at Chappelle during the encounter, resulting in a charge for assault with a deadly weapon.

Thompson said in the email that “the weapon in the case will be destroyed.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Chappelle’s representative for comment.

Here's why there's controversy around Dave Chappelle's 'SNL' hosting gig

Chappelle was not injured in the attack, while Lee was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police said. The attacker was held on $30,000 bond following his arrest.

Ahmed Ali, who attended Chappelle’s performance, told USA TODAY "it was crazy."

"There was a lot of confusion," Ali said. "I think we all thought, at first, that it was part of the show."

Ali said Chappelle was introducing rap duo Black Star, made up of Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli, when Lee jumped up onstage.

"The guy tried to tackle Dave, and Dave sidestepped," Ali said, noting the attacker was then "corralled" by security and chased backstage. Chappelle joined his security team backstage as they surrounded Lee.

According to social media video, Chappelle joked after the incident that the attacker "was a trans man," a reference to the backlash the comedian received following his controversial jokes about the transgender community in the Netflix special "The Closer."

When Chappelle returned to the stage, Ali said he addressed the crowd, saying he's been doing comedy a long time and that was the first time he jumped someone backstage.

Lee told the New York Post in May that the comedian's set was "triggering" for him. He also denied having the weapon drawn when he approached Chappelle.

"I identify as bisexual … and I wanted him to know what he said was triggering," Lee told the outlet. "I wanted him to know that next time, he should consider first running his material by people it could affect."
