I thought we were done throwing shit at artists?

Over the weekend, a video of Maluma catching a crutch (that’s right, a crutch) midair while performing “Mojando Asientos” went viral. In the video, originally taken on Aug. 31 during a stop in Sacramento, Maluma is seen singing the Feid collab’s lyrics before he spots the flying item coming from the audience and puts out his arm to catch it.

After catching it, Maluma couldn’t help but laugh at what a strange item it was to throw on stage. He then pretended the crutch was a baseball bat before grinding on it. (“POV: wishing I was that crutch right now,” wrote one fan on TikTok.)

The Colombian star is currently on his 30-city Don Juan World Tour, which is set to see him stop in cities such as Houston, Chicago, and Orlando before wrapping his tour in Miami on Nov. 4. (Rolling Stone had exclusive behind-the-scenes photos of the opening night.)

Early in the summer, headlines went viral about artists such as Bebe Rexha being attacked with a phone by a “fan.” Just in June, concertgoers pelted GloRilla with bottles, invaded Ava Max’s stage, and forced Pink to become part of a stranger’s grieving process by apparently tossing the ashes of a dead relative onstage.

Adele even called out the behavior during a show at her Las Vegas residency in July. “Have you noticed how people are like, forgetting fucking show etiquette at the moment? People just throwing shit on stage, have you seen them,” she said. “I fucking dare you. Dare you to throw something at me and I’ll fucking kill you.”

A Rolling Stone Music Now podcast episode analyzed how these strange incidents are just the most visible signs of a depressing trend: Particularly since the pandemic, people seem to have completely forgotten how to behave at shows.
