Malin Akerman has acted alongside her husband

Malin Akerman has her younger sister to thank for her relationship with her husband Jack Donnelly.

The Billions star, who was previously married to Roberto Zincone, met her current husband through her sister’s boyfriend. She was friends with Donnelly for a while before realizing her feelings for him — and the rest is history.

“[Donnelly] is actually my youngest sister’s boyfriend’s friend from drama school in England. I had known him for the past four years but didn’t see him ... Then all of a sudden he came back from England like a year-and-a-half ago, and I went, ‘Wow, have you always been this cute?' ” she revealed during an interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2018.

A year after getting engaged in 2017, the pair got married in front of their family and friends in Tulum, Mexico. Two weeks after the wedding, Akerman said that she was enjoying the newlywed bliss.

“I’m still floating from the wedding, it’s great. It feels different, for sure it does,” she told reporters while attending a Disney holiday skating party. “To be honest with you, it just feels like that last piece of the puzzle just clicked and it feels right.”

She added, “When you meet someone who just, without sounding cheesy, but kind of completes you, you just feel like you can be the best version of yourself. You don’t have to change. They bring out the best in you, and vice versa. It just feels right. He’s a good, good man.”

He has acted alongside Akerman

The Hollywood couple have worked together on several projects, including A Week in Paradise, Friendsgiving and Slayers.

In an appearance on The Talk in 2020, Akerman spoke about the “crazy S&M scene” that she worked on alongside her husband in Friendsgiving. Donnelly played Akerman’s boyfriend in the film, which opened with a rather risqué moment between the two.

“Just like being in our home,” Akerman joked when asked what it was like to film the scene.

“Any chance I get to have him do a scene like that, who better than to do it with than your husband?” she added. “It’s a really, kind of, intimate, crazy scene and thank God we know each other well enough instead of just meeting somebody on the first day and [doing] this crazy S&M scene. It was lovely to have him there.”

He is a television writer

In addition to his acting work, Donnelly is also a writer. Akerman revealed to Variety in May 2023 that her husband had penned a dark comedy that addresses difficult themes such as suicide and shared that she starred in the pilot. The actress said she played a therapist in the first episode and felt some of the heavier themes hit close to home because of her mother's history with depression.

“It was up and down with my mom, as it is with depression,” she told the outlet. “Sometimes she went real dark and we didn’t see her for days. She would lock herself in her room. And sometimes she was the best thing since sliced bread. And that was so much fun. She’s such a great person. I feel for her. I feel for anyone who struggles with depression.”

He and Akerman made their red carpet debut in Monaco in 2017

The couple were first linked when they were spotted sharing a kiss in March 2017 while on vacation. “They are really happy in one another’s company,” a source told PEOPLE at the time.

In June 2017, they took their PDA to the red carpet while attending the 57th Monte Carlo TV Festival. The two locked lips in front of the cameras, Akerman in a black lace jumpsuit and Donnelly in a black and blue suit.

He married Akerman in 2018

Akerman and Donnelly got engaged in 2017, and the actress announced the news shortly after in a touching Instagram post.

“This sweet and loving man has stepped into our lives and stole both our hearts! I think we’re gonna keep him around for a while,” she captioned a photo of the two of them, showing off her engagement ring.

Donnelly and Akerman wed on Dec. 1, 2018, in a serene beach ceremony in Tulum.

“It was all about being authentic ... not adhering to somebody else's standard of what a wedding should be,” she told Brides of their seaside nuptials. “We wanted the wedding to feel real to us. It gave us a lot of freedom.”

“We wanted something beautiful and lush,” she added of their wedding location. “When we visited Papaya Playa Project [in Tulum], we fell in love with the boho vibes and beach setting."

He is a stepdad to Akerman’s son

Donnelly is a stepdad to Akerman’s son Sebastian Zincone, whom she shares with her ex-husband Roberto. The actress has said that Donnelly has a close relationship with her son and that Sebastian was really excited about his mom and Donnelly’s marriage.

“He was brilliant with my son, and that was it, and my heart melted,” Akerman said about her choice to marry Donnelly during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan.

Akerman went on to explain how Sebastian reacted to the engagement news. “You try to explain to a 4½-year-old that you’re getting married and what an engagement is, and he jumped up on the couch and went, ‘Yay, we’re getting married!' ” she added.

He isn’t on social media

Donnelly doesn’t have any active public social media accounts but Akerman often gives fans a look into the couple’s private life and fun adventures.

On their fifth wedding anniversary, in December 2023, Akerman shared a few pictures from their nuptials and wrote a sweet message to her husband. “5 years ago today I married the man of my dreams,” she wrote.

Two months earlier, Akerman dedicated a birthday tribute to Donnelly, writing, "Happy Birthday to my big hearted man 💗 I love you more than words."
