Starring Luke Evans, Michiel Huisman and Jessica Ann Collins, “Echo 3” is an action-packed thriller set in South America that follows Amber Chesborough (Collins), a brilliant young scientist who is the emotional heart of a small American family. When Amber goes missing along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother, Bambi (Evans), and her husband, Prince (Huisman) – two men with deep military experience and complicated pasts – struggle to find her in a layered personal drama, set against the explosive backdrop of a secret war.

“We felt very much looked after and we had a walking fountain of knowledge (showrunner Mark Boal) when it came to how this situation would play out in the real world,” says Evans. “He enjoyed that it was a 10-episode series because you can peel back the layers deeper and deeper. [The scripts] morphed constantly. It was the best thing we could have had.”

Collins says of her character Amber, “She does have this trauma bond with her brother, which may or may not trump the bond she has with her own husband. They carry this secret. You hang your identity on your secrets. She’s also harboring this greater secret of whether or not she is an operator for the government. She has all these secrets. The way she moves through the piece — yes, she’s kidnapped, but she’s not really a victim. I was encouraged, and we tried to craft this person who didn’t behave in the way you might expect a woman on screen in those circumstances to behave.”

Huisman calls the character of Prince “a very flawed man.” He asked, “Is the audience going to care for Prince? Which of course I want. But I do think that is a testament to the writing and that allows us to go somewhere. I always imagined he wanted to find a family, a brotherhood that he finds in his relationship with Bambi, and finding his wife. It creates a new prospect and future for him, something that he’s never had. Once this trio starts to fall apart, which it does over the course of the season, that’s a desperate moment for my character and one that is fun as an actor.”

“Echo 3” is based on the award-winning series “When Heroes Fly,” created by Omri Givon, and inspired by the eponymous novel by Amir Gutfreund. It was produced for Apple TV+ by Keshet Studios, the U.S. production arm of Keshet International. Filmed in Colombia with English and Spanish dialogue, the series is showrun by Oscar winner Mark Boal (“The Hurt Locker”), who also serves as a director and executive producer alongside Keshet Studios’ Peter Traugott, Jason Horwitch, Omri Givon, Eitan Mansuri, Jonathan Doweck, Mark Sourian, Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman and Karni Ziv. Pablo Trapero directed four episodes including the pilot and serves as an executive producer.
