Our recurring new music feature Origins offers artists a platform to share exclusive insights into their latest release. Today, John O’Callaghan of The Maine breaks down the veteran alternative band’s new single, “Loved You a Little.”

As shown by the runaway success of When We Were Young Festival, 2000s nostalgia is at an all-time high. The Maine are one of the most consistent bands to come out of that era, having maintained a constant presence in the scene since breaking out more than a decade ago in 2008. Today, the Phoenix veterans have released their first single of 2022, “Loved You a Little” featuring Taking Back Sunday’s Adam Lazzara and rising singer Charlotte Sands.

A pop punk anthem that’s sure to be a crowd pleaser, “Loved You a Little” features The Maine’s lead singer John O’Callaghan trading sing-a·long vocals with Lazzara and Sands. As O’Callaghan tells Consequence, the song was expressly written with Lazzara in mind.

“The trademark dueling vocals of John Nolan and Adam Lazzara are what I fell madly in love with back when I first heard Tell All Your Friends,” O’Callaghan tells Consequence. “I knew I was going to ask Adam to sing on it and before he had the time to say no, I decided to write both parts in case he did. I really tried to lean into the trading off almost as if we were both telling the same story but from different perspectives.”

He continues, “Like a G, Adam delivered the exact same energy I’ve seen and heard from him ever since that first time I saw TBS at Bash On Ash in Tempe back in 2002, and we are goddamn excited that he agreed to be a part of this thing!”

Last year, The Maine released their eighth studio album, XOXO: From Love & Anxiety In Real Time, which included their biggest hit to date, “Sticky.” Beginning in March, the alt-rockers are embarking on a headlining tour in support of the LP. Snag your tickets here.

Wes Anderson:

I feel neither shame nor fear of being basic when I say that Wes Anderson inspired the vision for the video for “Loved You A Little.” In specific, his framing and coloring were what we sought to recreate, and with the help of lens God and director, Lupe Bustos, I think we did a bang-up job. This is our short saga in video novella form of wasted time and love spent carelessly.

The Replacements – “We’re Comin’ Out”

If there’s one thing about our band that might substantiate the “punk” in the effortless label of “pop punk” (besides our DIY everything approach), is our shared appreciation for actual punk music. Now don’t get fussy when I say this because it’s an opinion, but The Replacements are a punk band, and we love The Replacements wholeheartedly.

I still remember screaming every word to “Unsatisfied” when we had the chance to open for them years back and that moment meant everything to me. “We’re Coming’ Out” is one of their more glaring attempts at the brash upbeat vibe and in some strange universe, this song influenced our track.

Regret

This whole song is centered around the idea of not being able to get time back. To me, time is the most valuable thing we have to share and in this tune, I wanted to highlight the idea that I wasted it on someone. In reality, I wrote it about wasting time on worry. Worry still manages to occupy large portions of my brain, but at the time of writing this tune, it took up most of it. I regretted the idea that I allowed such a rotten feeling to dominate me, so I wrote a song about it.

Worth Takeaway

“Loved You a Little” is one of the last things we recorded during our years renting a room at Flying Blanket Recording Studios in Mesa, Arizona. As extreme creatures of habit and kings of convenience, food is at the top of the list of things that keep you in a creative mood while recording. We just happened to have one of the best sandwich shops in Arizona a few blocks away from us and I’d say six out of the seven days a week, we would make a visit to Worth. We’ve since moved out of Flying Blanket and away from Worth, and even though I’ve since become vegetarian, I still dream of that Calabrian turkey.

Taking Back Sunday – “Timberwolves at New Jersey”

The trademark dueling vocals of John Nolan and Adam Lazzara are what I fell madly in love with back when I first heard Tell All Your Friends. There aren’t many bands that did it, or did it as well as Taking Back Sunday, so when we set out to write our tune we wrote with that being at the forefront of the brain. I knew I was going to ask Adam to sing on it and before he had the time to say no, I decided to write both parts in case he did.

I really tried to lean into the trading off, almost as if we were both telling the same story but from different perspectives. Like a G, Adam delivered the exact same energy I’ve seen and heard from him ever since that first time I saw TBS at Bash On Ash in Tempe back in 2002, and we are goddamn excited that he agreed to be a part of this thing!
