Magnum P.I. Recap: Baby Talk — Grade the Midseason Premiere

When NBC’s Magnum P.I. on Wednesday night returned with its first new episode on five months, it quickly hit viewers — and Thomas — with a “pregnant pause.”

As in, Juliet reported to her beau that she was “late” and thus might be expecting.

The show did some fun/sweet things with this (possible) development, mainly in how Juliet assumed that Thomas would be a bit thrown/anxious by it. But it was pretty clear to viewers, via how Jay Hernandez played each scene, that Magnum was quietly excited about the possibility.

Now, I don’t buy that #Miggy would not put a quick pin in their Case of the Week so that Juliet could call back her doctor once the test results came in, but that allowed the episode to build to the very romantic final scene in which Juliet reported that she in fact is not with child — after which Thomas shared that he would have been “intimidated,” yes, by the prospect of fatherhood, “but also really happy.”

“Whatever way this turned out, it would have been the right way,” he explained, “because… I love you.” And Juliet returned those three not-so-little words in kind: “I love you, too — and I think I have for a really long time.”

The Case of the Week was pretty unique — a hit man for a client?! — and it offered some solid twists. Plus, stealth guest star Paul Blackthorne (Arrow, The Dresden Files) was perfect casting as someone as assassin with a heart of gold. Still, way harsh that some disgruntled heir to a televangelism empire would aim to take out a 12-year-old girl! Someone is due for a smiting.

Elsewhere during the kickoff to Magnum‘s final 10 episodes:

* Sham and Kumu helped move T.C. into a rehab facility, now 12 days after he got shot/paralyzed from the waist down in the midseason finale. There were the expected “T.C. Thinks He Is Better Already” and “T.C. Struggles With His Limitations!” moments, but in the end the show did something really beautiful vis a via T.C. accusing Sham of pursuing his own “second chance” by cheering him on. Sham brushed that off, though, saying he is simply out to thank T.C. for all he has done for him over the years. At episode’s end, as T.C., Sham and Kumu scarfed down some take-out, Sham took notice of T.C.’s big toe wiggling — a sign of good things to come…?

* While scrubbing the boat he calls home, Rick met Piper, a pretty marina worker who (oops!) offered up some very bad memories of La Mariana. Rick ID’d himself as the bar’s owner and assured her that it has improved in the years since she last was there. Later, Piper took Rick up on his offer to stop by La Mariana, where she marveled that a guy with a boat and a job is single. Rick noted that his status is, yes, “single” yet “complicated.” But Piper was undeterred, and suggested they “hang out” sometime.
