‘Maestro’ Trailer Chronicles the Price of Being in Famed Conductor Leonard Bernstein’s Orbit

The latest trailer for Netflix’s upcoming biopic Maestro reveals the personal costs of being in the orbit of one of the greatest American composers and conductors.

Directed, co-written by and starring Bradley Cooper, the biopic traces the life and work of Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) amid his great and complicated love affair with wife Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein, portrayed by Carey Mulligan. “One can be as free as one likes without guilt or confession,” Mulligan’s Felicia says to Cooper’s Leonard. “Please, I know exactly who you are.”

But the heart of the composer of Broadway’s West Side Story and the first American-born-and-trained music director of the New York Philharmonic was as complex as the mind of the arrangements, the new two-minute trailer reveals. “There’s a price for being in my brother’s orbit, you know that,” Sarah Silverman’s Shirley Bernstein tells Felicia.

That price, as teased, is sharing the attention and love of the “first great American composer” with his work and with others. “I love people so much, it’s hard for me to be alone,” Cooper can be heard saying in a dramatized re-creation of one of Leonard’s sit-down interviews. “And music, it keeps me glued to life.”

Maestro also stars Matt Bomer, Maya Hawke, Josh Hamilton, Scott Ellis, Gideon Glick, Sam Nivola, Alexa Swinton and Miriam Shor.

Cooper co-wrote the film with Josh Singer, and produced alongside Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Fred Burner, Amy Durning and Martin Scorsese. Singer, Carla Raij, Bobby Wilhelm, Weston Middleton and Tracey Landon served as executive producers.

Maestro will have a limited theatrical release Nov. 22 before streaming on Netflix beginning Dec. 20.
