Top awards contenders Carey Mulligan and Bradley Cooper take center stage in the new trailer for Netflix’s “Maestro,” which Cooper also produced, co-wrote, and directed.

The new film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival before playing to rapt crowds at this year’s New York Film Festival, focuses on the life of Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and his marriage to actress Felicia Montealegre (Mulligan).

“If summer doesn’t sing in you, nothing sings in you. If nothing sings in you, then you can’t make music,” Cooper as an elder Bernstein says in the trailer, quoting a concept his wife had said to him previously.

The emotional new trailer features footage from across the film, showcasing Cooper’s evolution as Bernstein from his mid-20s through his late 60s. (Oscar winner Kazu Hiro is responsible for the uncanny transformation.) The composer and conductor died in 1990 at the age of 72.

Here’s the official logline from Netflix: “‘Maestro’ is a towering and fearless love story chronicling the lifelong relationship between Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. A love letter to life and art, Maestro at its core is an emotionally epic portrayal of family and love.”

“Maestro” is expected to be a top Oscar contender for Netflix. The film currently sits in sixth place in the Gold Derby odds for Best Picture. Mulligan and Cooper are both in third place in the odds in their respective acting categories. The film is also predicted to earn nominations for original screenplay and cinematography. Even in categories where Gold Derby users and experts haven’t predicted nominations, “Maestro” is in the top 10 – including Best Director for Cooper, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.

“Maestro” will hit theaters on November 22 and then arrive on Netflix starting on December 20.
