A new biography sheds light on the origins of Madonna and her brother’s long-standing feud and it looks like one of her most famous relationships is partially to blame.

Madonna, 65, and her younger brother Christopher Ciccone, 62, were once inseparable in the early days of her success. Ciccone served as Madonna’s backup dancer and later her backstage dresser and show designer but opened up a public feud with the singer when he released a somewhat scathing 2008 biographer, Life with My Sister Madonna, which painted her as a mean and demanding boss.

Now, a new biography gives more background to their falling out and links it to Ciccone’s dislike of Madonna’s former husband Guy Ritchie.

Mary Gabriel’s new biography Madonna: A Rebel Life tracks the feud back to 2000 when Madonna didn’t hire Ciccone for her Drowned World Tour. The interior designer also allegedly took issue with her choice to hire someone else to redesign her New York City apartment.

Things came to a head as Madonna prepared to marry Ritchie that same year. Ciccone allegedly became increasingly frustrated with the British filmmaker’s homophobic remarks that Madonna, a well-documented LGBTQ ally, didn’t always shut down.

Ritchie previously shut down claims Ciccone made in his 2008 memoir accusing the Snatch director of homophobia. “I don’t make anything of the book. The poor chap wrote it out of desperation,” he told The Guardian at the time. “I don’t think it’d be intelligent to comment on that. I can’t give too much equity in what the chap’s gonna write in that book… But you’d be hard pushed to be a homophobe and marry Madonna.”

The memoir effectively ended Ciccone’s relationship with the “Material Girl” singer but he hinted in 2017 that he could have written a far more scathing account of his relationship with his sister. “I could have written that book, the book about how horrifying she is or can be, but I didn’t write that book,” he told The Sun. “I was just looking for a little recognition for the work I’ve done for 20 years with her, that it wasn’t one person.”

In 2019, Ciccone told Radar Online that they had mended their relationship for the sake of their aging father. “We are at peace now and just spoke last week,” he said at the time.
